In Jena, the Kunstsammlung Jena is part of the Städtische Museen and is responsible for preserving and exhibiting collections of visual art.
The exhibition programme continues the trajectory of the historic Jenaer Kunstverein; at the beginning of the 20th century this association played a decisive role in establishing Jena as a centre of the artistic avant-garde and in bringing artists such as Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Paul Klee and Wassily Kandinsky to the city's attention.
At the centre of the presentations are rotating special exhibitions on art and art history. Young, international contemporary artists are shown in current configurations, alongside solo exhibitions of recognised artists. Many exhibitions are accompanied by publications issued by the collection.
The municipal holdings comprise almost 5,000 works in painting, graphic art, sculpture and object art. The focus is 20th-century art: from the classical modern through an extensive body of art from the GDR to national and international contemporary art.
